T.A. Blake Middle School Fine Arts Program of Studies Info

6th Grade

GRADE SIX COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

The art program in sixth grade provides the opportunity for questioning and exploring. While using a variety of media, assignments will focus on selecting and arranging composition, simplification, enlargement, abstraction, pattern, repetition, unity, and color theory. Students will study works of art to understand the many ways artists arrive at creative solutions. Reflection on personal interests, attitudes, and habits will help build self-confidence and self-discipline, allowing one to grow more sensitive to thinking critically and creatively.

7th Grade

SEVENTH GRADE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

The art curriculum for seventh grade offers a balance between personal expression and developing skills to convey realism. Students will learn and apply techniques used for creating portraits, for instance measuring the proportion of the face, sculpting three dimensional replicas, and using exaggeration and distortion to convey emotion. Students will also explore several facets of color theory including working with complementary color, analogous color, as well as using a wide range of dark and light tones to create the illusion of form in two dimensional works.

8th Grade

EIGHTH GRADE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

The art curriculum for eighth grade builds on previously learned techniques and processes and facilitates the refinement of these skills. Students begin the year making connections to the community through observational drawings of the local architecture and environment. Atmospheric and linear perspective are explored in order to give the illusion of depth to their drawings and paintings. Skeletal proportion is addressed along with depicting how the human figure moves in space. Students are also introduced to block printing where they will design, carve, and print a series of images using reductive processes. As always students are encouraged to express original ideas and reflect their own interests in the work they create.
